...Peter van Janicki, for instance, is a Toronto artist. His stunning art works are usually based on expressions of every day life of city dwellers. Peter’s main sources of inspiration are always authentic. Using either sketches or damaged photograps from newspapers Janicki portrays real people with deformed bodies and faces, their paradoxical expectations, plaintive, desperate existence and their sometimes bizarre relationships. This eccentric painter -- like a psychologist, tries to explore the dark side of human mind and absurdity of our civilization. ...Peter van Janicki’s vivid, futuristic-looking paintings and collages are seemingly original - haunting and provocative and extremely accomplished. The paintings, which are terrific, dappled chords of geometric color, depict people -- or possibly cyborgs, there is such a mechanical to them - whose faces and bodies get suddenly interrupted by scabs of flesh-like impasto. The effect is a stunning. Usually the people are sitting or standing at tables, eating or drinking in apartments or suburban bars. The paintings scream with vibrant color, but there is sterility and loneliness of the human experience expressed on the canvas that is both haunting and poignant...
